Engineering intern - Aeronautical Systems
Spring-Summer 2020

Hired as a manufacturing engineer co-op but floated around various engineering positions including test engineering, design engineering, and project lead.

Summary of work:

  • Performed rough FEA to verify and asses failure modes of facility dust collection system stands due to high winds and suggested possible solutions.

  • Assisted in setup and troubleshooting of full-scale static load testing of several aircraft components utilizing cranes, hydraulics, strain gauges, load cells, and various other sensors.

  • Led a team of 5 remote-working interns and 1 on-site intern to develop a payload carrying pod for use on current and future aircraft platforms based on vague and open-ended instruction.

  • Assigned individual tasks to interns utilizing their skills and interest to maximize efficiency of the team.

  •  Scheduled meetings and design reviews with former US military personnel and other relevant employees to gain feedback and insight on customer needs and project progress.

  • Worked through market research, SRR, and ultimately ending with a light PDR within three months.

Design Engineer Intern - Fuel Systems
Summer 2019

Worked on the fuel pump development team in Columbus Indiana designing a new fuel lubricated, electronically actuated pump. Gained exposure to design engineering while working with prototype components that can see pressures up to 13,000 psi and holding surface finish tolerances down to the sub-micron level.

Summary of work:

  • Weekly design meetings with engineers from India and sometimes China to discuss progress.

  • Procured prototype components experimenting with different materials including carburized 316 stainless, nitride coated 316 stainless, and various plastics.

  •  Developed a test procedure to simulate component operating conditions using an older generation fuel pump.

Engineering Work Experience: About

Study Abroad Course in Automotive Electronics

Summer 2019

Spent the semester researching the history and treads of active safety systems used in the automotive industry. Traveled to Mittweida Germany for 2 weeks to present our teams work to Hochschule Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. Over the course of the stay, our team worked with a group of German students to expand on the presentation and later re-presented it to the same committee with the German additions.
